Chapter 17
Colefield caught up to her outside the restaurant climbing into her jeep.
âHey, Manning!â he shouted. âHang on.â
The jeep had its top off and windows rolled down. A pair of dog tags hung from the rearview mirror. She closed the door and waited. Colefield jogged over.
âForget your wallet?â
âTake a ride with me. Thereâs something I need to do before I head to the shed.â
She looked at her watch. âHop in. My jeep has a better stereo.â
Colefield gave her directions. They drove down Front Avenue listening to Bluesville on Sirius XM. John Nemethâs âFeelingâ Freakyâ came on. Normally, he would have dug the sexy lyrics and bluesy harmonica but with Manning so close, it felt strange, like there was a message there. When they eventually turned onto Macadam, Manning broke the silence.
âI canât sleep lately,â she said.
âYeah, me, too.â
âWeâre kind of a fucked-up pair.â
âSpeak for yourself.â
âMy ex is holding my dog hostage. How fucked up is that?â
âIâll have a talk with him.â
âYou donât know him.â
âIâll get him to see the light.â
âYouâre about to make me cry, asshole.â
He pointed out the traffic light ahead. âCross the Sellwood Bridge and make your first right. Youâll get through thisâ¦â
âI wanted to believe this relationship was going to be the one ⦠and it turned out to be just the same as all the rest.â
Colefield coughed. Her words hit a deep cord. Maybe he was just reading too much into Jillâs silence.
He pointed where to turn. âFollow Harney Street down to the moorage.â
They parked near the ramp leading to the houseboats. Manning killed the engine and started to get out. Colefield reached over and affectionately touched her on the shoulder. âIâll get your dog back, donât worry.â He climbed out. Manning grabbed her keys and followed him.
They walked down the steep ramp, hopped over the gap in the catwalk, and took the narrow walkway to Montgomeryâs. Colefield banged hard on the solid oak door and then pushed it open and went inside.
âWho goes there!â boomed Montgomeryâs gravelly voice. âIntruders will be shot.â
âBill â itâs me, Colefield.â
âColefield Old Boy, youâre just in time,â he looked up from reading his newspaper in his tattered bathrobe. âAnd I see you have brought a lunch guest.â
âBeverley Manning allow me to introduce you to my landlord, William A Montgomery, Captain USMC, retired.â
Manning nearly stumbled over some trash in the galley as she made her way over to the where Montgomery was sitting in his wheelchair. Montgomery dropped the paper and reached for his cane. He wanted to stand to greet the deputy.
âWhat a pleasure,â he said and hobbled to his feet. They shook hands. âWhy are you hanging around with such a rogue?â
Manning smiled. âWe work together.â
âAre you working undercover, dear? I like your outfit.â
She laughed.
Bill took his cane and knocked a stack of newspapers off one of the cluttered chairs. âHave a seat, my dear.â She sat next to him and became fascinated by all the targets stapled to his walls and ceiling. Then she looked at the endless
